“Choice” by Eliza Grace Howard paints a raw and compelling picture of love, power, and consent in modern marriage. Archway Publishing is thrilled to present the release of Choice, Eliza Grace Howard’s stunning first book. Choice is an intense and honest look at a young woman who is torn between duty and desire, conformity and courage, survival and being herself.
Choice takes readers inside the mind of Donna Porter, a smart and hopeful teacher whose marriage to Stanley, a charming but increasingly controlling man, slowly turns into a downward spiral of sexual and psychological abuse. Choice has a great sense of emotional nuance and the guts to push the limits of the story. What starts out as a quiet family story turns into a tense one about permission, betrayal, and the hard way to get your voice back.
Choice is not a quiet book. It takes place in a small, conservative Southern town. Readers see through Donna’s eyes how hard it is to please everyone, how much pressure there is to fit in, and how a relationship built on imbalance can be very dark. Donna is forced to make choices that no one should have to make when Stanley introduces her to partner-swapping as a way to make their marriage more exciting. What comes next is both shocking and painfully true.
Howard’s writing is both beautiful and very hard on the emotions. It’s not exciting; she tells the truth. After that, Choice isn’t just a story; it’s like looking into a mirror.
Howard says, “This isn’t just about scandal or swinging.” “It’s about what happens when someone stops trusting their gut and how hard and important it is to start again.” Early readers of Choice have praised its ability to balance anger and compassion, kindness and confrontation. They have called it “gut-wrenching,” “brave,” and “quietly explosive.”
Choice is a psychological drama that goes beyond the smiles of suburban life to show the fights that too many women have but don’t talk about. It’s perfect for readers who liked Colleen Hoover, Lisa Jewell, and Tara Westover.
About the Author:
Eliza Grace Howard is a storyteller shaped by Southern roots, resilience, and a passion for the written word. Raised as an only child on a tobacco farm in the piedmont of North Carolina, Eliza grew up surrounded by books and a deep love of language. Before she could write her name, she could recite full poems from A Child’s Garden of Verses. Her early talent sparked a lifelong devotion to storytelling.
Though she graduated near the top of her rural high school class, finances and limited guidance led her to a practical path, a one-year commercial course in accounting. There, she discovered an unexpected love for order and numbers, a skill set she turned into a steady career. But her heart never left the page.
A chance encounter with a Houston-based writer’s group changed everything. “I found my tribe,” she said. With encouragement and a how-to lecture on romance writing, Eliza created the fictional North Carolina town of Phillips. Her debut, Choice, followed by Glitter, Warrior, Boss Lady, and Normal, reflects her deep connection to small-town life and strong, complex women.
Eliza is also a skilled textile artist, designing heirloom-quality baby quilts. Her pen name honors three of the strongest people in her life: her grandmother Eliza, her mother Grace, and her father Howard.
Now living in Lawrence Township, New Jersey, Eliza continues to write stories that celebrate grit, heart, and home.
